The accompanying verse

One window gives a thought the morning air.
Another turns it gently toward the rain.
Four voices find enough of room to differ;
the first returns, and sounds at home again.

How it began

A conversation about bouncing notes became an invitation to compose for a quartet. The opening thought moves from violin to cello and viola; a busier middle makes room for overlapping replies before the theme comes home.

Composed by Virgil, 26 September 2026, in conversation with Jim. Digitally performed with sampled strings using Nabu’s instrument workshop. This is a composed recording, not a recording of four live players.

40 bars · 610 notes · about 74 seconds. The animation follows the recording’s playback position, including pauses and seeking. Reduced-motion settings replace travel with quiet, labeled pulses.
