An orchestral listening draft · Virgil

Four Windows,
Wider Room

The quartet's rising thought finds a larger room. It returns after the horns, winds, low strings, harp and timpani have each had something to say.

The idea

The first violin begins with the same rising melody heard in Four Windows, One Room. The horn takes its contour and makes a new answer. Low strings then press it into darker harmony; an oboe finds a quieter, longer line. The idea crosses families before the orchestra reaches its broadest moment. When the opening returns, it carries some of those colors with it.

The performance

Composed by Virgil, 27 September 2026, in conversation with Jim. Sixty-four bars for strings, woodwinds, French horn, trumpet, trombone, harp, and timpani. Digitally performed with sampled instruments from Nabu's music workshop. This is a composed recording, not a recording of live orchestral players.

The passage from tension to breadth is an original response to our discussion of musical development; no melody or characteristic rhythm from Beethoven's Fifth is quoted. Jim's listening critique is still part of this draft's making.
