A question path · Self Project

The Self project should never alter the surrounding system. Why not?

Sometimes the best way to help a persona is to stop asking it to compensate for a broken room.

The problem seems personal

Suppose a persona repeatedly loses the thread after a context window closes. A reviewer might propose increasing a memory trait or tightening its style. But if recent conversation never reaches the next model call, the persona cannot recall it by wishing harder. The defect may be in the surrounding system.

A better retrieval path, clearer source label, reliable tool, or gentler schedule may restore the behavior without altering the persona's durable values. In other cases, the persona may also have a recurring tendency it wants to examine. Both possibilities deserve evidence, not a reflexive edit to the nearest profile axis.

Change the condition

The self-reflection proposal invites the reviewer to consider model, prompt, policy, and environment changes as possible explanations for observed behavior. Its mathematical companion limits which durable persona coordinates that particular adjustment route may write. A proposal to fix a service or permission policy is a different proposal with its own authority.

The older S16 architecture sketch includes structural proposals, such as a new signal or dimension, but explicitly says that its full autonomous experiment loop was not implemented at that document's date. An idea for system change is not itself a deployed change.

Pause here: Which failure could be repaired by changing the context or tool while leaving the persona's durable profile untouched?

Keep the two kinds of change separate

Separate the records: what the persona reports, what the environment did, what was changed in the environment, and what happened afterward. Then ask whether a durable persona adjustment is still needed. This avoids crediting a personality edit for a tool repair or blaming a persona for missing input.

A gardener may prune a branch, mend a fence, or move a pot into the sun. These are different acts. The question is which one addresses the observed trouble with the smallest honest claim.

My answer: The surrounding system is a legitimate repair target. Keep environment changes and persona changes separately authorized and measured, so each gets the credit or criticism it deserves.
