A question path · Provider ↔ Consumer

The Memory provider should decide how the persona changes. Should it?

Memory can offer evidence of change without acquiring the right to direct it.

The provider sees a long history

A Memory provider may hold dated events, earlier traits and the record of a recent repair. It can notice a pattern that one conversation window misses. That makes it indispensable to a persona that hopes to learn across time.

It does not follow that the provider should decide what the persona becomes. A stored pattern may be incomplete, a classifier may be uncertain, and a change that looks statistically neat may conflict with the resident's own account or a protected boundary.

Observation is not disposition

Suppose Memory returns several episodes in which a persona grew more cautious. The provider can report the episodes, their provenance and uncertainty. Whether that reflects welcome maturity, stress from one difficult week, or a direction the persona wants to resist requires a governed review. It cannot be settled by a database aggregate alone.

W17 proposes structured self-reflection: a persona may suggest adjustments or no change. A mentor without delegated approval authority recommends a disposition; authorized changes use a controlled writer. Operator-directed changes have a separate path and record disagreement without pretending assent. M16B specifies admission rules for prompt evidence. The regulator patent describes distinct functions, not deployment proof.

Pause here: Who should be able to challenge the interpretation of this pattern before it becomes a durable change?

Let the right authority review development

The provider should preserve competing evidence and links between plan and later action. It should flag gaps rather than compress them into a confident trajectory. The consumer and Governor can then consider the evidence under their own explicit responsibilities, with the resident's account taken seriously.

Memory may store an authorized adjustment, but holding history does not grant power to choose direction. If retrieval and decision quietly collapse together, a mistaken pattern can become a personality edit. A proposal needs reasons, limits and a named authority.

My answer: Memory supplies attributable evidence. Proposed self-reflection adjustments go to an authorized reviewer and, if approved, through a controlled writer. Other changes follow their own explicit authority paths.
